How do you replace broken marble mosaic? 🛠️
Share
A small mosaic tile has broken? Don't panic! You usually don't need to replace the entire mosaic surface. It is possible to replace individual tiles and make the mosaic look beautiful again. ✨
🛠️ What you need
- A new mosaic tile
- Knife or grout scraper
- Small chisel or similar tool
- Hammer
- Safety glasses
- Adhesive suitable for natural stone
- Grout
- Small grouting tool
- Sponge and water
🔨 How to replace the mosaic tile

1. Remove the broken tile
Carefully cut or scrape away the grout around the tile with a knife or grout scraper. Feel free to protect the surrounding mosaic. Then, carefully tap the broken tile with a small chisel and hammer until it comes loose.
⚠️ Be careful! When removing the broken mosaic tile, work calmly and superficially. You want to replace the stone, not the waterproofing membrane behind it. 😉 Never cut or puncture the waterproofing membrane.

👉 Take it easy – the goal is to remove only the damaged tile.
2. Clean the surface
Remove old adhesive and clean the substrate so the new tile has an even surface to bond to.
3. Install the new tile
Apply a small amount of adhesive and gently press the new mosaic tile into place. Try to get it level with the surrounding tiles.

4. Let it set
Follow the adhesive manufacturer's recommended curing time before grouting.
5. Grout and clean
Fill the joint around the new tile and clean carefully with a slightly damp sponge. Done! ✨
💡 One of the advantages of mosaic
A small piece of damage does not mean the entire surface has to be redone.
Compared to a larger tile, mosaic can be easier to spot-repair, as you can often replace a single small stone instead of a whole tile. This is particularly practical if the damage is minor.
And with marble, you also get the natural stone's unique colors, veining, and variations. ✨
📦 Why you should buy a little extra
When ordering mosaic, we recommend that you always factor in 10–15% extra for waste.
But the extra material can be useful even long afterwards. A mosaic tile might accidentally break during a renovation, an impact, or other mishap.
Since marble is a natural stone, color, veining, and texture can vary between different batches. That is why it is smart to save a few extra tiles from the same order. 😉
A small reserve today can save both time and trouble in the future.
